Façade Help and Troubleshooting

Façade for Windows requires a computer 1.6 GHz or faster, XP / 2000 / ME, with 256MB or more of RAM and 1.0GB free hard disk space. Version 1.0 can only install to the C: drive, but version 1.1 allows installation to any drive.

Façade for Macintosh requires a G4 or G5 computer 2.0 GHz or faster, OS X 10.3 (10.4 or higher strongly recommended), with 512MB or more of RAM and 210MB free hard disk space.

I'm having trouble downloading Façade.
When I try to install Façade, the installer doesn't work, or tells me "this archive has an unsupported version".
On Windows, is there a way to install Façade to a drive other than the C: drive?
When I launch Façade, it tells me the CPU of my computer is too slow to run it.
When I launch Façade, nothing happens - no loading screen, nothing.
When I launch Façade I never get past the loading screen, or past the initial fade up at the front door.
Façade is running very sluggish or slow, even if my CPU speed is fast enough.
When I launch Façade, I'm told my videocard may have a Microsoft Corporation videocard driver.
When I play Façade, sometimes the characters stop responding.
When I play Façade, I get an error message saying Façade is having trouble running.
Grace and Trip don't seem to understand me, or won't listen to me. What am I doing wrong?

Q: I'm having trouble downloading Façade.

The original Façade 1.0 for Windows (800MB) is now being mirrored on several sites, see the
download page. Another way to download Façade is using BitTorrent, a free, non-spyware tool used to download very large files, by sharing the load among everyone downloading it at the moment. Click here for instructions for installing BitTorrent, and then downloading Façade for Windows or Macintosh.

The latest version of Façade, v1.1, is now only 167MB for Windows and 131MB for Mac, and is available via BitTorrent on our site and hopefully direct download on mirror sites soon as well.

If BitTorrent isn't working, or it is very slow, it may be because:
- you are behind a firewall preventing BitTorrent downloads
- the Façade BitTorrent network is sluggish or down; trying again later may help

Worst case, you can
mail-order the 2-CD Façade installer for Windows for $14+shipping. (We make no profit off the CD's, they are sold at the cost of pressing and shipping them.)

Q: When I try to install Façade, the installer doesn't work.

If you get an error when running the installer, it could be because your download didn't fully complete. The file size of the v1.0 installer should be 781 MB (819,101,929 bytes), v1.1 for Windows is 167MB (175,523,943 bytes), and v1.1 for Macintosh is 131 MB (138,224,255 bytes).

On Windows, the installer is very large and takes up to a few minutes to uncompress itself for installation; please be patient. If the installer starts, but doesn't work after a few minutes, it may be a sign that your computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements for running Façade: Windows XP/2000/ME, on a computer 1.6 GHz or faster, with 256MB or more of RAM and 1.0GB of hard disk space.

Q: On Windows, Is there a way to install Façade to a drive other than the C: drive?

Yes,
download version 1.1, which fixes that bug from version 1.0!

Q: When I launch Façade, it tells me the CPU of my computer is too slow to run it.

Façade for Windows requires XP / 2000 / ME on a computer 1.6 GHz or faster. Façade for Macintosh requires a G4 or G5 computer 2.0 GHz or faster, OS X 10.3 (10.4 or higher strongly recommended).

If you are running on laptop, it is possible that the CPU speed has slowed down automatically, if you are or were running on a battery. To ensure your laptop is running at full speed, plug it in and restart.

Q: When I launch Façade, nothing happens - no loading screen, nothing.

Façade does some Windows function calls when first launching, that seem unsupported on some people's installation of Windows. The newly downloadable v1.1 of Façade may fix this problem for some computers.

Q: When I launch Façade I never get past the loading screen, or past the initial fade up at the front door.

On Windows, what could be happening is that your videocard settings for antialiasing and anisotropic filtering are set such that they are incompatible with Façade's unusual rendering style. A solution that may allow Façade to run is to set these features to "application controlled". (We believe the "application controlled" setting will still allow these features to be active when you play other games, it just gives each application the option to use them or not.)

To try this, open the Control Panel called "Display", go to the "Settings" tab, click "Advanced", and then search for a dialog that may be called something like "Performance & Quality Settings", to find the settings for "Antialiasing" and possibly "Anisotropic Filtering", if your videocard supports that. Change these settings to "application controlled", and close the control panel. Then try running Façade again.

Q: Façade is running very sluggish or slow, even if my CPU speed is fast enough.

Façade seems to have trouble running on some machines, regardless of the CPU speed; a few players have written us about it. We’re trying to diagnose what’s wrong — stay tuned to this Help and Troubleshooting page, thanks.

You might try the solution to loading screen problem, above.

Q: When I launch Façade, I'm told my videocard may have a Microsoft Corporation videocard driver.

If you get this message, Façade has detected that your computer is currently using a Microsoft Corporation videocard driver, which may not be your videocard manufacturer's driver. We believe this can happen if you have recently installed a new service pack for Windows (which may happen automatically with Windows XP). Without the proper videocard driver, Façade may run slowly or not at all; Façade does some unusual OpenGL rendering calls which typically needs the manufacturer's driver to work.

Installing your videocard manufacturer's driver may allow Façade to work, and is relatively easy. The following instructions are for Windows XP. (Note we take no responsibility for any alterations you make to your operating system, such as installing new drivers. You are choosing to install this new driver voluntarily.)

1. Determine your videocard manufacturer, using the following steps:
__a. On your desktop, right click on "My Computer" (or whatever your computer icon is called) and choose "Properties".
__b. Click on the "Hardware" tab.
__c. Click on the "Device Manager" button.
__d. In the pop-up window, click on the "plus" next to "Display adapters".
__e. The name of the videocard should appear, with the manufacturer's name in it, such as "NVIDIA", "ATI" or "Radeon". Note the name of your videocard, such as

2. Go to the manufacturer's website. Common sites include:
__NVidia
__ATI (includes Radeon)

3. Find the "download drivers" button on the website, and follow the instructions for your videocard type, found in step 1.

4. After downloading and installing the new driver, restart and try running Façade again. If this still doesn't work, try writing us at help-no-spam@interactivestory.net (remove "-no-spam"), including the name of your videocard in the email.

Q: When I play Façade, sometimes the characters stop responding.

You've probably just encounter an unfixed AI bug. We apologize, there are still a few minor bugs remaining in Façade. We may be releasing a patch in the future to fix some of the remaining bugs. When the characters stop responding, you'll need to quit Façade and restart it.

Q: When I play Façade, I get an error message saying Façade is having trouble running.

This may simply be due to an unfixed AI bug in Façade, or because other applications are running, or some other factor limiting the CPU available. Please try running Façade again, after closing other applications or restarting. We may be releasing a patch in the future to fix some of the remaining bugs.

Q: Grace and Trip don't seem to understand me, or won't listen to me. What am I doing wrong?

You’re probably doing nothing wrong – Façade, being a computer program, is limited at times in its ability to understand or react to you. Our hint guide, "
Behind the Façade", offers strategies for avoiding problems when playing Façade, and tips on how to create the best dramatic performance.

Known bugs:

__- pathplanning is imperfect; they occasionally walk through a wall
__- there are somewhat rare AI crashes, where the characters will stop responding
__- occasionally the hand cursors won't change to their gestures (e.g. knock, hug, kiss, sip)
__- minor graphics glitches, such as imperfect rendering of facial lines,
___hands sticking through furniture
